History: Before the formation of the first Negro National League in 1920, black baseball consisted primarily of independent clubs who created their own schedules and barnstormed. "Giants" was a common early name for many Negro league teams because of the popularity of John McGraw's New York Giants, baseball's dominant team in the early 20th Century.
