But after their most successful season in 1959, when Havana won the IL Governor's Cup as well as the Junior World Series, their position in U.S. baseball became ensnarled in the political tensions caused by Fidel Castro's rise to power, and the franchise was unceremoniously transferred to Jersey City in the middle of the 1960 season. Despite efforts in recent years, Havana has not hosted professional baseball since. (The current Cuban League has been an amateur affair since Castro ended sports professionalism in 1961).
